Launch of a Learnership Program in Sub Saharan Africa

Talent development is a key strategic priority under the performance culture pillar of our regional LEAP strategy. We believe developing our talents with the right training and guidance is one of the most powerful mechanisms to shape future talent. Aligned with this vision, Johnson Controls implemented a learnership program which gave learning opportunities to 23 learners, and also implemented a bursary one year program.
The program driven by Archibald Makatini- GM, Lynn Millin- Reginal HR Manager and Sub Saharan Africa leadership team offered an opportunity for young undergraduates in the underprivileged communities to gain skills; that would assist the learners to build a foundation for them to pursue a professional career. Four of the learners were offered employment jobs at Johnson Controls.
The learnership curriculum plan which is approved by industry body MERSETA assesses the learners’ aptitude, personality and interest and assigns them to different businesses on a rotational basis to gain a basic technical foundations.
The learnership program enables Johnson Controls to support the community by addressing the lack of diversity and technical skills. The learnership program will also enable the learners too identify and pursue various skills in areas such as logistics; warehousing; sales; administration and more.
